Our Cross Country Course

Philip Surl, BE Regional Co-ordinator described the courses at Carlton as "beautifully flowing courses that use the natural features of hedges, ditches and undulating countryside to the riders advantage, providing interesting but fair courses. A treasure trove of well built and intelligently designed fences."

The course was designed by Philip Herbert over 18 years ago and includes BE Intro and Pre-novice fences as well as numerous schooling fences. Suitable for riders and horses of all abilities.

Having trained with Noel Palmer and Bill Thompson, Philip Herbert became a professional course builder in 1979. Renowned for his design and build of cross country courses from BE Intro to CCI 4*, he has been responsible for Burghley Horse Trials since Bill Thompson's retirement. Burghley won the coveted L'Anne Hippique Best Event Award in 2008. Philip is British Eventings' Ground Care Specialist Adviser and has been a BE Technical Adviser for nearly thirty years.

"I have been helping the Tustings with their cross-country course since it was first conceived in 1990. It has been a pleasure to work on such an attractive, well drained and well maintained piece of ground and I am delighted that the family have finally taken the plunge and decided to run a BE event.

The site lends itself really well to Eventing, with plenty of flat areas for parking, dressage and showjumping. The cross-country courses run round a natural bowl with very good viewing and plenty of natural features including hedges, ditches, steps and banks.

The water is surrounded by trees and has different ways in and out and different sized steps. The ground is always maintained in tip top condition, you will not find poached or grooved out take offs and landings as the course is not open in unsuitable weather conditions. There was a really good atmosphere at the 2008 BE event, you will receive a warm and friendly welcome if you come schooling or to compete at Carlton."

I came to Carlton xc schooling on Friday evening for the first time - and I just wanted to say what an absolute pleasure it was! The variety of fences and their presentation was super - just perfect for the youngster I was on. Thank you, and I look forward to coming again soon!
